Red Fossilised Coral Cabochon

$20 AUD

Handmade red fossilized coral, often called agatized coral, is a natural gemstone formed over millions of years when ancient coral reefs are replaced by silica-rich minerals like agate or chalcedony. This unique Australian artisan creation showcases the beauty of nature's artistry. Unlike modern "precious coral," which is relatively soft and harvested from living reefs, red fossilized coral is a durable, mineralized stone that stands the test of time. Key Characteristics: Composition: Composed primarily of silicon dioxide (agate), which replaces the original calcium carbonate structure, making it a stunning choice for your jewellery collection. Color: Vibrant red to orangish hues are often caused by the presence of iron or other minerals during the fossilization process. Patterns: Distinctive flower-like or starburst patterns, known as "eyes," reflect the skeletal structure of the original coral polyps, giving each cabochon its unique character. Hardness: Ranges from 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, making it much more durable than modern reef coral (hardness 3–4) and suitable for daily-wear jewelry like rings. This piece has been handcut and polished by me, showcasing my dedication to craftsmanship. It includes some remainder of the softer part of the fossil on the underside and edges, adding to its charm and authenticity.
